How Much Life Insurance Do You Truly Need? A Step-by-Step Gap Analysis

Use the DIME formula (Debt, Income, Mortgage, Education) to estimate how much life insurance your family may need, with a clear step-by-step gap analysis.

A bright home kitchen table with a calculator, a notepad of figures and a cup of coffee, beside a window overlooking a leafy neighborhood.

One of the most common questions we hear is also one of the hardest: how much life insurance is enough? If you are the primary breadwinner or a new homeowner, a guess can leave your family short, while overbuying can strain your budget. A simple framework called DIME can turn that question into a short list of numbers.

What Is the DIME Formula?

DIME stands for Debt, Income, Mortgage and Education. It is a common starting point for a life insurance gap analysis, which compares the coverage your family would need with the coverage you already have. It is not a rule or a guarantee, but it gives you a clear structure.

The Four Steps

Grab a notepad and work through each letter.

Step 1, Debt. Add up the debts that would not disappear if you were gone. Think of car loans, credit cards, student loans and personal loans. Some people also include final expenses, such as funeral costs.

Step 2, Income. Think about income replacement. Ask how many years your family would need your paycheck to maintain its lifestyle. If your children are young, you might want income support until they are independent. Multiply your annual income by the number of years you want to cover. Your household's other income and savings can influence this number, so consider them as well.

Step 3, Mortgage. If you recently bought a home, the mortgage may be your largest single obligation. Many families choose to include the remaining mortgage balance so that survivors can stay in their home without payment pressure.

Step 4, Education. If you hope to help your children attend college or trade school, estimate those future costs and add them. Because education costs vary widely, use a figure that feels realistic for your family's goals.

Putting the Numbers Together

Once you have the four amounts, add them up. Then subtract what you already have available, such as:

  • Existing life insurance, including any coverage through work.
  • Savings and investments you would be comfortable using.
  • Other assets your family could rely on.

The remainder is your estimated gap. That number is a starting point for conversation, not a final answer. Your family's needs may differ, and life changes, such as a new baby or a bigger mortgage, can shift the math.

Other Things to Consider

  • Coverage through your employer often ends if you leave the job, so it may not be dependable on its own.
  • Term length should generally match the years your family would need protection.
  • Health and age can affect pricing, which varies by carrier and applicant.
  • Review regularly, especially after a major life event.

Let Us Help You Run the Numbers

At Ben Cat USA, we are an independent agency appointed with 12+ carriers. We Listen & Learn about your household, then We Tailor Your Plan based on your real numbers rather than a one-size-fits-all guess. You can start on your own with our interactive Life Coverage Estimator, then talk through the results with us at your own pace.

A few practical examples show why this exercise matters. A household with a large new mortgage and young children may find that the mortgage and education portions drive most of the total, while a household with little debt may be more focused on income replacement. Neither is wrong. The point is to see your own picture clearly. Keep your notes handy, because you can update them whenever your debts, income or family plans change, and a fresh look every few years is a good habit.
